Welcome. This is Hovland.

As one of the thousands of new websites to launch recently, I speak on behalf of all of us that we hope your virtual experience is fine as cream gravy. I’m currently a full-time writer for a large health care provider in Central Florida and also trade freelance writing for various goods and sundries. Award winning agencies, in-house creative departments, freelance clients and partnering creatives have all made this land a part of their land too.

Well provisioned to accompany your crew in explorations to the brave new word.

Florida Hospital • Maitland, FL

February 2009 – Present  •  Copywriter
Florida Hospital waited 100 years to hire it’s first writer. Me. Granted, it’s no first summit of Everest, but it did begin a sea change in how marketing was developed for the organization. Direct collaboration with the internal designers allowed us to begin taking on projects that had once been outsourced to agencies. Well received both by clients and award shows our ideas—untypical of an internal creative team—have rewarded us with ever-increasing solicitations for more ideas and an expanding department to meet the demand. My involvement includes detailed concept development with both messaging and rough sketches*, full campaigns, headlines, body copy, program naming, and support content for every facet of Florida Hospital’s marketing needs (print, outdoor, radio scripts, TV scripts and video scripts and rough sketch* storyboards, web, collateral, educational materials, patient manuals).

EVOK Advertising • Lake Mary, FL

November 2008 – January 2009 • Copywriter
Soon after moving to Florida from Kauai, I was hired on by Evok. As one of two writers, I created headline and support copy for their diverse client roster, and concepted, collaborated and wrote for several full campaigns, including print, radio scripts, TV scripts, outdoor and web. Unfortunately a slackening economy coupled with deep client budget cuts forced a series of layoffs; after three months, I was let go. No tears.

Tsunami Marketing • Kauai, HI

February 2006 – July 2008 • Copywriter / Production
Kauai is essentially a giant National Geographic centerfold. And the rainbows. My God, the rainbows. When I wasn’t immersing myself in the utopian surroundings, much of my time was spent talking story with an immensely talented group of creative intellectuals, trapped in the bodies of downhill mountain bikers, surfers and tennis divas. As Tsunami’s sole in-house writer, I developed our clients’ own stories for web, print, collateral, radio scripts, newsletters and occasional press releases. With past experience managing print and broadcast production, I also assisted in quality control of printed materials, and facilitated voice talent and studio time.

Words Travel

From remote Hawaiian resorts to nationally-recognized hospitals, this land covers a lot of ground.

Island Truss

Not many people will know what Island Truss’s Hundegger SC-1 computer automated saws are, but trust me, they should have their own reality show. After Tsunami Marketing’s creative director established the “Build ‘em Strong” mantra, he set me to work whittling content that would match their unique brand and quality building materials.

Orlando Fitness Center

Florida Hospital’s Orlando Fitness Center offers the most convenient way to get pumped before, during and after work.

Trustco Bank

A few harvests back, when the pork barrels started rolling swiftly downhill, Trustco Bank was one of the only lending institutions still willing and able to provide loans.

Buca di Beppo

The national restaurant chain wanted a simple way of expressing how patrons can feed an army and keep the peace when the bill comes.

Florida’s Blood Centers

From a Milton Glaser-inspired logo sketched in my moleskine, we created a full campaign to drive blood donations for Florida’s Blood Centers.

Florida Hospital Volusia Spine Campaign

I have one cool scar and I wasn’t even conscious when I got it. Might have made a good story, but now we’ll never know.

Breast Cancer Awareness

For a man-child concepting ideas for breast cancer awareness, things can spiral downward quickly. Fortunately, a simple adjustment of the pink ribbon kept things classy.

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

The video for this campaign was made for about $500, but it appears as if we spent double that. Smoke and mirrors. And stadium lights.

Celebration Health Bariatric

Hundreds of people have shed, literally, thousands of pounds because of Celebration’s Bariatric Program. The message needed to be equally as compelling.
