You Found Hovland.

I’m a Hawaii-based freelance writer of all sorts. Friendly as a welcome wagon with skills as fine as cream gravy. Take a gander and soak in the surroundings. After all, this land is your land, too.

Florida Hospital • Maitland, FL

February 2009 – Present  •  Copywriter
Surprisingly, I was the first writer this 100-year old company had ever hired. Granted, it’s no first summit of Everest, but it did begin a sea change in how marketing was developed for the organization. Direct collaboration with the internal designers allowed us to begin taking on projects that had once been outsourced to agencies. Well received both by clients and award shows our ideas—untypical of an internal creative team—rewarded us with ever-increasing solicitations for more ideas and an expanding department to meet the demand. My involvement includes detailed concept development with both messaging and rough sketches*, full campaigns, headlines, body copy, program naming, and support content for every facet of Florida Hospital’s marketing needs (interactive, print, outdoor, collateral, video scripts, broadcast scripts and rough sketch* storyboards).

In November of 2011, I became lead interactive writer for the relaunch of and currently contribute to and manage much of the content being developed for our new web presence.

EVOK Advertising • Lake Mary, FL

November 2008 – January 2009 • Copywriter
Soon after moving to Florida from Kauai, I was hired on by Evok. As one of two writers, I created headline and support copy for their diverse client roster, and concepted, collaborated and wrote for several full campaigns, including print, radio scripts, TV scripts, outdoor and web. Unfortunately a slackening economy coupled with deep client budget cuts forced a series of layoffs; after three months, I was let go. No tears.

Tsunami Marketing • Kauai, HI

February 2006 – July 2008 • Copywriter / Production
Kauai is essentially a giant National Geographic centerfold. And the rainbows. My God, the rainbows. When I wasn’t immersing myself in the utopian surroundings, much of my time was spent talking story with an immensely talented group of creative intellectuals, trapped in the bodies of downhill mountain bikers, surfers and tennis divas. As Tsunami’s sole in-house writer, I developed our clients’ own stories for web, print, collateral, radio scripts, newsletters and occasional press releases. With past experience managing print and broadcast production, I also assisted in quality control of printed materials, and facilitated voice talent and studio time.

From remote Hawaiian resorts to nationally-recognized hospitals, this land covers a lot of ground.

FH Sports Medicine

This spot ran on the jumbotron during the bowl games played at the Citrus Bowl this year. Yeah, big time. In terms of the size of the TV, at least. As the official hospital of the Tampa Bay Bucs, Orlando Magic, the Solar Bears, UCF Knights and probably your kid’s T-Ball team, Florida Hospital ensures that all athletes at any level are playing their best.

Florida Hospital Partnerships

Florida Hospital has more partners than a fancy NY City law firm. At a recent conference, they needed a way to both promote them, and thank them for their contributions.

Lolly’s Locks

For many women, losing their hair during cancer treatment feels like losing some of their identity. Lolly’s Locks is working to change that for cancer fighters all over the country.

Feeding Children Everywhere

“Change jar” takes on a whole new meaning when you consider what Feeding Children Everywhere and their US Hunger Initiative can do with a single quarter.

Florida Hospital ER Wait Times Promo

When announcing a new website with up-to-the-minute ER wait times, the language of a rocket bike is universal. Spot 1 of a 4 in series.

Sports Medicine Program Overview

Win lose bleed bruise puke pain toil train tears rehab restore fall down come back chronicle capture communicate it…well, all but the puking part.

Trustco Bank

A few harvests back, when the pork barrels started rolling swiftly downhill, Trustco Bank was one of the only lending institutions still willing and able to provide loans.

Buca di Beppo

The national restaurant chain wanted a simple way of expressing how patrons can feed an army and keep the peace when the bill comes.

Florida’s Blood Centers

From a Milton Glaser-inspired logo sketched in the ol’ moleskine, we created a full concept campaign to drive blood donations for Florida’s Blood Centers.

Florida Hospital Volusia Spine Campaign

I have one cool scar and I wasn’t even conscious when I got it. Might have made a good story, but now we’ll never know.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Because of better early detection methods and Breast Cancer Awareness education efforts like these, more women are beating this disease than ever before.

Celebration Health Bariatric

Hundreds of people have shed, literally, thousands of pounds because of Celebration’s Bariatric Program. The message needed to be equally as compelling.

Celebration Health Bariatric Video

Video for Celebration’s Bariatric Program, which accompanied the campaign.
